The Dynasty Nobody Wanted

I intend to write a halfhearted narrative version of a dynasty of Baseball Mogul I'm playing mostly as writing practice and to make the game itself more significant (by means of attaching narrative meaning). I hope nobody enjoys it; as mentioned, I am mostly trying to stay sharp.

Steve Phillips's term as General Manager of the New York Mets came to an ignominious end on June 12th, 2003, following a successful if rocky tenure spanning part of seven seasons. On an interim basis, Mets assistant General Manager Jim Duquette took over the reins and lead the team to its worst record since 1993. The team finished 66-95, with franchise cornerstone player Mike Piazza playing only 68 games due to injury. The 2003 team featured something of a youth movement, supported by C/1B Jason Phillips (.298-11-58) and 3B Ty Wigginton (.255-11-71), lone bright spots for the team. Over the off-season, the team acquired Seattle CF Mike Cameron, a gold glove center fielder in 2003. on January 18th, 2004, the team relieved Jim Duquette of his responsibility as interim General Manager and hired John Spelferson, responsible for player development for the Boston Red Sox from 1999 to 2003.

John Spelferson, a 45-year old native of Newark, New Jersey, had a long career as a baseball executive and had been on most organization's shortlists as a potential General Manager. His hiring was a clear signal that the team wanted to move towards youth. The new General Manager broke off ongoing negotiations with highly touted Japanese free agent SS Kazuo Matsui. Though this decision made the new General Manager initially unpopular, though owner Fred Wilpon guaranteed the new General Manager at least three years to see results as an organization. Spelferson believed that the team's farm system was more productive than widely believed and through Spring Training 2004 spent much of the time having scouts reevaluate some players within the system, especially noting that relievers Dan Wheeler and Heath Bell, starter Brian Bannister, as well as infielder Jeff Keppinger were previously undervalued by the team. Each of these players won a role coming out of Spring Training with the Mets, with Keppinger becoming the Opening Day second baseman opposite promising young star SS Jose Reyes (.307-5-32) and Bannister becoming the fifth starter.

Spelferson's fundamental view was that the Mets were a team in transition. Their face of the franchise, C Mike Piazza, was now 35 years old and was a source of uncertainty due to his injury history. He was, in a way, emblematic of the team; there were many holdovers and veterans from the team's last successful season, 2001, such as starters Al Leiter and Steve Trachsel, but Spelferson viewed them as holdovers of a bygone era. On the reverse, the team had a farm system of many players with Major League potential, but only marginally so. Only 3B David Wright and SP Scott Kazmir truly stood out as future stars. Consequently, Spelferson was of the belief that the team was in a kind of purgatory, stuck between a mediocre Major League roster that could not compete in 2004 and a mediocre farm team that would not be able to compete in the future in a meaningful sense. Following extensive meetings with ownership and the "three year promise" secured from owner Fred Wilpon, Spelferson decided in March 2004 that he would attempt, if possible, to trade off as many veteran players for prospects as he could in 2004 while trying to mix undervalued young players in in an effort to maximize their potential. He knew that the team could very well finish worse than its 2003 record, but viewed it as the necessary next step.
