Floyd's one year $6.5 million contract did not factor into Spelferson's plans for the future, and consequently he was traded to the Texas Rangers along with $5.5 million for outfielder Jason Jones - a 27-year old with plus power and eye tools but limited chances in the Majors - and 22-year old Minor League middle infielder Drew Mayor, whose positive speed, eye, and contact tools but slender frame made him an intriguing prospect for the future.
Neither trade made by GM Spelferson in March 2004 were for especially talented young prospects, but cleared payroll and added players that would be under team control for years to come. Westbrook would take Trachsel's place in the rotation, but the Mets still needed upgrades in outfield depth both due to the Floyd trade and due to questions about the talent of right fielder Karim Garcia. Towards the end of Spring Training, the team signed 29-year old outfielder Chris Richard - who hadn't played regularly since his 2001 season with Baltimore - to play left field. Richard profiled as a Designated Hitter due to inadequacies in the field. Nonetheless, Richard managed to win the starting Left Field position over the newly acquired Escobar and Jones as well as Jeff Duncan, who started 41 games in Center for the Mets in 2003.
